THE SUNGOLD SHOW AND THE JETLINERS
The Jetliners were among Sri Lanka’s most legendary show bands, emerging in the late 1950s under the leadership of Mervyn Rodrigo and later led by drummer Noel Ranasinghe. With charismatic members like Clifford Richards, Conrad de Silva, and others, the band transformed Ceylon’s nightlife with their vibrant repertoire—spanning jazz, Latin, rock, and soul. Their performances at prestigious venues such as the Mount Lavinia Hotel earned them fame across the island and recognition throughout Asia.
The Sungold Show, proudly presented by Mackwoods Sungold Tea, was one of the most celebrated radio and stage variety programs of the 1960s and early 1970s. Showcasing live music, dance, and comedy, it quickly became a cultural landmark, setting the standard for entertainment during that golden era.
